First summer squash harvest check (planting date known)

Summer squash is often ready about 50–75 days after planting, depending on variety, and it sizes up fast once fruit sets.

When we suggest this

What would stop us suggesting it

• When you note a new stage, or the timing window ends.
• When you mark it Done or Doesn't apply. "Doesn't fit my setup" stops it for that plant this season.

What to do

1. Look under the big leaves for squash, and keep checking every day or two from now on.
2. Pick long types at about 6–8 inches and pattypan types at about 3–4 inches across.
3. Tap "Fruit forming" if fruit is starting but none is ready, and we'll adjust.

What we can't know

• Your variety's days to harvest. Seed packets list it.
• How warm your season has been. Cool weather slows squash down.

South Dakota State gives 50–75 days to harvest by variety; Maryland gives 50–65 days from transplant. We start asking at day 50 for both seeded and transplanted plants, which may be a little early for seeded ones.
