Removing small weeds around new plantings

Nearby weeds compete with garden plants for light, water, and nutrients.

When we suggest this

  • Your noteIt is 7–35 days after the planting date you gave.
  • Your noteThis is a reminder window, not a prediction of growth. It does not start before that window.
  • Your noteYour note gives an exact planting day for this plant; an approximate garden-wide date is not enough.
  • Your notePlants that qualify in the same growing location share one task.

What would stop us suggesting it

  • When you note a new stage, or the timing window ends.
  • When no qualifying plants remain in that spot, or their recorded timing is too old.
  • Done or Doesn't apply closes the reminder for the plants included. "Doesn't fit my setup" also suppresses this reminder for that spot this season.

What to do

  1. Look around those plants in that spot for small weeds.
  2. Hand-pull them while small. If using a hoe, skim the surface without disturbing crop roots.
  3. Remove weeds before they flower and scatter seed.

What we can't know

  • Which seedlings are weeds; leave any you cannot identify yet.

The day range is a reminder window, not a prediction of plant development. An exact planting date is required.

Where this advice applies

All US regions.

For the listed crops; combine plants in the same growing location.

Exceptions

  • Unknown planting dates and established plantings outside this reminder window.
