Checking new vegetable and herb transplants

New transplants need moisture and time to adjust to their outdoor conditions.

When we suggest this

  • Your noteIt is 0–14 days after the planting date you gave as a transplant.
  • Your noteThis is a reminder window, not a prediction of growth. It does not start before that window.
  • Your noteYour latest soil note for these plants in the past 48 hours does not say moist or soggy.
  • Your noteYour note gives an exact planting day for this plant; an approximate garden-wide date is not enough.
  • Your noteYour note: no stage noted yet; or stage is seedling or growing or vining.
  • Your notePlants that qualify in the same growing location share one task.

What would stop us suggesting it

  • When you note a new stage, or the timing window ends.
  • When no qualifying plants remain in that spot, or their recorded timing is too old.
  • When you note moist or soggy soil for all the plants included in this check.
  • Done or Doesn't apply closes the reminder for the plants included. "Doesn't fit my setup" also suppresses this reminder for that spot this season.

What to do

  1. Check those plants in that spot, including the soil in their original root balls.
  2. Water gently if that soil is drying; let it drain rather than keeping it saturated.
  3. For the first few days after planting, give temporary shelter if strong sun or wind is stressing the plants.

What we can't know

  • Root-ball moisture and whether the plants were hardened off.

The day range is a reminder window, not a prediction of plant development. An exact planting date is required.

Where this advice applies

All US regions.

For the listed crops; combine plants in the same growing location.

Exceptions
