Checking supports for climbing vegetables

Supports give climbing varieties room to grow and keep supported fruit off the soil.

When we suggest this

  • Your noteIt is 0–14 days after the planting date you gave.
  • Your noteThis is a reminder window, not a prediction of growth. It does not start before that window.
  • Your noteYour note gives an exact planting day for this plant; an approximate garden-wide date is not enough.
  • Your noteYour note: no stage noted yet; or stage is seedling or growing or vining.
  • Your notePlants that qualify in the same growing location share one task.

What would stop us suggesting it

  • When you note a new stage, or the timing window ends.
  • When no qualifying plants remain in that spot, or their recorded timing is too old.
  • Done or Doesn't apply closes the reminder for the plants included. "Doesn't fit my setup" also suppresses this reminder for that spot this season.

What to do

  1. For those plants in that spot, check the variety label before adding supports.
  2. Give climbing peas and pole beans a firm trellis. Bush types may not need one.
  3. Check tomato cages or stakes. If you plan to grow vining cucumbers upward, set their trellis in place and guide shoots gently as they grow.

What we can't know

  • Which varieties climb and which supports are already installed.

The day range is a reminder window, not a prediction of plant development. An exact planting date is required.

Where this advice applies

All US regions.

For the listed crops; combine plants in the same growing location.

Exceptions

  • Compact bush types that do not need support, or plants whose supports are already adequate.
