Frost protection for flowering peas

A low of 32°F is forecast for the forecast night. Pea vines handle light frost, but open flowers and young pods are easily damaged, which can cut the harvest.

When we suggest this

  • ForecastA night at or below about 32°F is forecast for tonight or the next 2 nights.
  • Your noteYour note: stage is flowering or pods forming.

What would stop us suggesting it

  • The morning after the forecast night passes (or when a fresh forecast no longer shows it).
  • When you mark it Done or Doesn't apply. "Doesn't fit my setup" stops it for that plant this season.

What to do

  1. Pick any pods that are ready.
  2. Before evening, cover the vines with frost cloth (row cover) or an old sheet.
  3. Take the cover off the next morning so plants don't overheat under it.

What we can't know

  • How cold it will get in your garden compared with the forecast.
  • How many flowers and young pods are on the vines right now.

We found no source giving an exact temperature for pea flower damage. Sources agree flowers and developing pods are the frost-sensitive part, so we use a forecast low of 32°F or below. Vines themselves tolerate the upper 20s°F or colder.

Where this advice applies

All US regions.

Any US garden where a late spring or early fall frost can reach flowering peas.

Your garden can run a few degrees colder or warmer than the forecast point.

Exceptions

  • Pea plants that haven't flowered yet. Young vines handle light frost.
  • Plants you've marked finished.
