Picking green beans regularly once pods form

Pods left to mature send the plant's energy into seeds and cut the harvest. Bush beans bear for about 2–3 weeks and pole beans for about 5–6.

When we suggest this

  • Your noteYou noted the stage: pods forming or ready to harvest.

What would stop us suggesting it

  • When you note a new stage, or the timing window ends.
  • When you mark it Done or Doesn't apply. "Doesn't fit my setup" stops it for that plant this season.

What to do

  1. Pick pods that are firm, crisp, and full length, before the seeds make the pod bulge.
  2. Check the plants often while they're bearing. New pods are usually ready 1–2 weeks after the flowers open.
  3. Pick when the leaves are dry. Handling wet plants can spread bacterial blight.

What we can't know

  • Whether your beans are bush or pole types.

Sources say to pick frequently or regularly without giving a fixed interval; pods are ready about 7–14 days after flowering. Bearing periods (2–3 weeks bush, 5–6 weeks pole) are typical values from one source.

Where this advice applies

All US regions.

Any US garden where snap beans are forming pods.

Bush beans bear for a few weeks; pole beans keep going longer.

Exceptions

  • Plants you've marked finished for the season.
  • Beans you're growing for dry beans or seed.
