Dry spell soil check

The nearest station has recorded less than 0.25 in of rain in the last 7 days. Most vegetable gardens need about 1 inch of water a week from rain or watering, and containers dry out faster than beds.

The nearest station has recorded less than 0.25 in of rain in the last 7 days. Most vegetable gardens need about 1 inch of water a week from rain or watering.

When we suggest this

  • ObservedThe nearest weather station has recorded less than 0.25 in of rain over the past 7 days (4 days for containers), with nearly complete station records.
  • Your noteYou haven't noted rain or moist soil for that spot in the past 48 hours. If you note dry soil, we go with your note.

What would stop us suggesting it

  • When the station records rain, or you note rain or moist soil for that spot.
  • When you mark it Done or Doesn't apply. "Doesn't fit my setup" stops it for that plant this season.

What to do

  1. Push a finger into the soil. In beds, water if it's dry about 2 inches down.
  2. In pots, water if the top inch is dry, until water drips from the drainage holes.
  3. Water at the base of the plants, early in the day if you can. One deep soaking beats several light sprinkles.

What we can't know

  • Whether rain fell at your garden. The station may be miles away.
  • How fast your soil drains. Sandy soil dries out faster than clay.

About 1 inch of water a week is the common extension guideline; needs rise in hot weather and in sandy soil. Less than 0.25 in over 7 days means less than a quarter of that was met; the 7-day and 4-day windows are our trigger choices, not published thresholds. Container needs vary most: extension sources say pots may need water daily in summer, so this check can come later than a pot actually needs it in hot weather.

Where this advice applies

All US regions.

Any US garden during the growing season.

Engine: one task per location note (beds after 7 dry days, containers after 4). Pots under eaves or on porches may get no rain even when the station records some; a gardener's soil note overrides the station for 48 hours (design §8.7).

Exceptions

  • Locations where you noted rain, or moist or soggy soil, in the last 48 hours.
  • Days when the station's rain data is incomplete.
  • Plants you've marked finished for the season.
