Cutting a fava cover crop at flowering

Fava adds the most to the soil when cut at flowering. If the plants go on to make beans, most of the nitrogen they gathered ends up in the seeds.

When we suggest this

  • Your noteYou noted the stage: flowering.

What would stop us suggesting it

  • If it's still open after its window, it shows as overdue for up to 2 weeks, then closes.
  • When you mark it Done or Doesn't apply. "Doesn't fit my setup" stops it for that plant this season.

What to do

  1. If you grew them to feed the soil, cut the plants at soil level now, before pods form, and leave the roots in the ground.
  2. Chop the tops and dig them into the top few inches of soil, or lay them on top as mulch.
  3. Wait 3 to 4 weeks before planting or sowing in that bed, and don't sow seeds into freshly turned plants.

What we can't know

  • Whether you're growing these fava beans for the beans or for the soil.

Sources say to cut anywhere from first bloom to about half the plants blooming, and give 3 to 6 weeks before planting depending on whether the tops are dug in.

Where this advice applies

All US regions.

Wherever fava grows over winter.

Exceptions

  • Fava you're growing for the beans: skip this, or say it doesn't apply.
