Thinning carrot seedlings
Carrot roots need room to fill out. Thinning early gives the ones you keep space to grow.
When we suggest this
- Your noteIt is 21–42 days after the planting date you gave from seed.
What would stop us suggesting it
- If it's still open after its window, it shows as overdue for up to 2 weeks, then closes.
- When you mark it Done or Doesn't apply. "Doesn't fit my setup" stops it for that plant this season.
What to do
- Thin once seedlings are about 1–4 inches tall and have a few true leaves.
- Leave about 2 inches between carrots. Large varieties can use a little more room; small or baby types a little less.
- Snip extras at soil level. Pulling them can disturb the roots of the carrots you keep.
What we can't know
- When the seeds came up. Carrots can take 1–3 weeks to sprout.
- How thickly you sowed.
The 21–42 day window is our estimate. Carrots take about 10–21 days to come up, and sources give different thinning cues: about 1 inch tall (Illinois), 3–4 true leaves (Utah State), 3–4 inches tall (Minnesota, Iowa State), or roots about 1/2 inch across (Washington State). Final spacing across sources is about 1–4 inches.
Where this advice applies
All US regions.
Any US garden where carrots are sown directly outdoors.
Carrots sprout slowly, especially in cool or crusted soil, so the seedlings may still be small when this appears.
Exceptions
- Carrots sown with pelleted seed or seed tape at final spacing.
- Plants you've marked finished.
