Apple late-summer color check-in

Apples ripen anywhere from summer to November depending on variety, so we ask instead of guessing a date.

When we suggest this

  • Your noteYou haven't noted a planting date or a stage yet (we ask even when a date is set).
  • Climate averageThe date falls from 75 days before your typical first fall frost to 14 days after your typical first fall frost, based on 1991–2020 climate normals.

What would stop us suggesting it

  • When you note a new stage, or the timing window ends.
  • When you mark it Done or Doesn't apply. "Doesn't fit my setup" stops it for that plant this season.

What to do

  1. Look at the background color of the skin, the part that isn't red.
  2. Tap the stage that fits. We'll suggest harvest checks from there.

What we can't know

  • Your variety's usual ripening time.

Apple varieties ripen from late July to November in Utah's variety table, and from late June (low-chill 'Anna') to October in Texas; some late varieties don't ripen before the first frost where seasons are short. The window is our choice, not a variety date.

Where this advice applies

All US regions.

Any US garden with a typical fall freeze, from about 11 weeks before to 2 weeks after the typical first fall frost.

Early summer varieties, including low-chill apples in the South, can ripen before this window; log the stage anytime.

Exceptions

  • Trees you've noted as coloring, ready, or finished.
  • Gardens with no typical fall freeze (frost-free climates).
